“Peaceful Rivalry” Among Four Small-Town Barbershops

(Red Springs, NC) Jeffery Murphy says there’s no competition between the four barbershops in or near the downtown of Red Springs.

“The town’s too small for that,” he said, gesturing out of a nearby window with a hand holding a pair of clippers.

Still, Murphy swears that the best haircuts in town can be found in a small clapboard building near the town’s railroad tracks, on the corner of Fourth and Vance streets — Council’s Barber Shop.

“That’s not something to feed a rivalry, that’s just facts,” he said. “You can go to McDonalds — or you can go to Western Sizzlin….”
