The Nomad Barber Goes to Hong Kong

1 Barber, 1 Cameraman, 5 Continents, 12 months.

This is not a series of funny barbershop banter or a fictional barbershop with expected everyday situations – this is a series of one barber who travels the world to truly get a grasps of barbershop culture in every region. On his journey to Honk Kong, Miguel Gutierrez (the Nomad Barber) speaks with an Kem, another barber originally from the U.K. who moved out to Hong Kong two years earlier.

Kem speaks of the apparent differences between barbershop culture in Hong Kong vs. the U.K / U.S. – mainly referring to the relationships between barber and client. While in western culture, the relationship between barber and client is quite casual and even friendly. Yet, in Hong Kong the traditional relationship is strictly businesslike.

Kem also explains that salons are the norm in Hong Kong haircare for both women and men. But modern barbershops like the Gentleman Tonic are becoming popular by helping Hong Kong men explore new and innovative hairstyles that just aren’t available at the salon.

Make sure to watch the video to its entirely as Miguel also visits a traditional Chinese barbershop.
