Janet Mbugua Ndichu, Terryanne Chebet, and Joy Doreen Biira are television anchors in Kenya who have, for years, been expected to look a certain way. The ladies feel as if there has been a throwback to the “west is best” because they have been pressured to look like superstars in the U.S. such as Beyonce and Rihanna.
The television anchors are now ready to embrace their au natural look, especially now that it has become more popular. Only 21% of the black population use relaxers, which is a decline of 26% since 2008. Like many others, they have now reached the point where they are ready to appreciate themselves and no longer hide their beautiful, natural look.
