Exploring The Three Types of #BarberArt – Abstract/Freestyle

This month, BARBinc News goes deep into the world of #BarberArt by exploring it’s three main artistic ‘branches’…

Years ago, we at BARBinc were the first to popularize the hashtag #BarberArt to showcase notable barber-based designs.

Over the years, we’ve identified several ‘branches’ or categories of BarberArt. So, for the month of August, we invite you – our readers – to come with us as we dive deeper into the artform we love so much..!

What is BarberArt…?

First and foremost, BarberArt is more than just hair… BarberArt can be found in a finely crafted barber’s chair, or the many sketches, paintings and sculptures that we highlight every week.

…And let’s not forget about the many #ladybarbers who, while grinding hard on the job, are often works of beauty themselves…
However, the term ‘BarberArt’ largely refers to a range of designs that are part of a client’s haircut… And these designs can be divided into three distinct areas:

#1: Abstract/Freestyle art
#2: 2-Dimensional “Logo” art, and
#3: 3-Dimensional “Photo/Portrait” art.

This week, we focus on the first category…
ABSTRACT/FREESTYLE BARBERART
By far the most common type of BarberArt, Abstract/Freestyle often (too often…) comes in the form of “tribal” hair tattoos, as shown below:

However, the Abstract/Freestyle category also includes a wide range of styles – from simple geometric patterns to complex, overlapping lines and curves – basically anything that a barber can think up is fair game.

Abstract/Freestyle BarberArt is often the first type of art that a barber will attempt. Like sketching with a pencil, this type of art is very forgiving because slight errors can be fixed by tweaking the design mid-cut.

However, don’t think that Abstract/Freestyle is all fun-and-games. Making lines appear straight on a non-flat surface (i.e. the client’s scalp) and maintaining sharp edges throughout the design are challenges that will keep any BarberArtist on his/her toes.

Also, the use of gradient shading – an advanced skill that’s used in all three BarberArt categories – can make even simple Abstract haircuts ‘pop’ with added dynamism.

Here’s a few examples of barbers who (in our humble opinion) are at the top of their Abstract/Freestyle game.
