This month, BARBinc News goes deep into the world of #BarberArt by exploring it’s three main artistic ‘branches’…
This week, we explore the branch of…
“PHOTO-REALISM” ART

Earlier this month, we explained two major branches of BarberArt —
Abstract/Freestyle art and
Logo-Work art…
If the first two are branches, then PhotoRealism can be considered the “crown” of the BarberArt tree…

Before the invention of the camera, it was nearly impossible to capture real-world images with great detail. (Way) back in the 17th century, the “Dutch Masters” were the world’s first “Photo-Realistic” artists.
They used subtle painting tricks to create incredibly subtle light-effects on each subject.
Similarly, the essence of PhotoRealism lies in a barber’s ability to create subtle levels of shade within a haircut by cutting depth/texture at a highly detailed level.
For example, checkout the “wrinkles” in the cap of Biggie Smalls, as crafted by @TheJoeBarber…

…and the wrinkles in the face of Aaron Rogers as crafted by Miguel Rosas (@newstyle84)

…in contrast, lack of shading can make the best of portraits look “flat” and 2-dimensional.

Portraits of famous people is by far the most popular type of haircut in this niche.

Usually, a spot of white is used to help enhance the eyes and to provide “negative” shade.

But some BarberArtists go “beyond the cut” and use color to make an image “pop”…

There are many fine barbers worldwide who have mastered the PhotoRealism art form. We at BarberArt have been following (and admiring) their work for nearly 5 years…
But… In our humble opinion, there is one barber who IS the undisputed king of PhotoRealism…<
And He Is…

If there is ONE person that should be studied by every aspiring barberartist, it is Austin-based Rob Ferrel, aka “@RobTheOriginal”. Rob’s haircuts are literal masterpieces – prompting the team here at BARBinc to coin the term “Thousand-Dollar Haircut”…

Mr. Ferrel, who is a true artist, can make mind-blowing images using ANYTHING – from hair to salt (to tortillas..!). However, it is his haircuts – created with intricate details beyond imagination, that have brought him the most fame and fortune.

BarberArt is a great way to challenge your barbering skills. So, if you’ve already mastered
FreeStyle/Abstract art and have put in your time with
Logo-Work, then PhotoRealism may be the next level to conquer…
We actually recommend NOT starting with portraits… Rather, start with adding depth and texture to animals, buildings and landscapes.

After you’re comfortable with shading/lighting on everyday objects, you can attempt to tackle the bigger challenge of sculpting the human form…

Eventually, you’ll have the confidence to carve a face into each haircut.
